I find it so interesting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You may have never heard of Mud Creek or\u00a0Garrison Creek before, but yes, those waterways exist in Toronto\u00a0\u2014 they&#8217;re just underground, either flowing beneath our feet or buried forever.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a chance that an old stream used to run underneath your house, too. If you&#8217;re curious enough to check, just head use the&nbsp;ingenious&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lostrivers.ca\/disappearing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disappearing Rivers of Toronto app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The online map, designed by the data mapping project&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/geohist.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Historical GIS Partnership<\/a>&nbsp;for Toronto&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lostrivers.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lost Rivers<\/a>&nbsp;in 2017,&nbsp;shows the original stream network of Toronto, and how those waterways have disappeared over time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a user-friendly time slider, you can watch Toronto&#8217;s landscape shift from 1802 to 2017, and see which streams have disappeared thanks to development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The colour-coded map even tells you what dates the rivers were last seen on a map, or see all the layers superimposed on one another at once.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan Critchley, who worked on the web-mapping project, gives a more detailed explanation on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/jonathancritchley.ca\/lostrivers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how he made the app<\/a>, for the coders out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontogreen.ca\/what-we-do\/lost-rivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Toronto Green Community<\/a>, who launched the Lost Rivers project in 1995, is responsible for much of Toronto&#8217;s fascination with the city&#8217;s forgotten waterways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the past 25 years, their 45-minute Lost River Walks have been the catalyst for discussions around streams and creeks (some still flowing,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogto.com\/city\/2014\/02\/5_lost_rivers_that_run_under_toronto\/\">others long gone<\/a>) and the&nbsp;environmental implications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lost River Walks have been cancelled until further notice, but\u00a0you can always do the Ashbridge&#8217;s Bay Watershed or Tomlin Creek walks by yourself\u00a0\u2014 the maps are right there on the app.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will be getting this app for sure and going for lots of walks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay safe out there everyone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read about this today in BlogTO and thought I would spread the work.
