Calling all Don Mills Residents!!!

Take a look at this! How disappointing!!

“CITY OF TORONTO CANCELS
PLANNED DON MILLS COMMUNITY CENTRE
In what I feel is an absolute display of arrogant disregard for the people of Don Mills and the agreement reached between Cadillac Fairview, the City of Toronto, and on behalf of the Don Mills community, Don Mills Residents Inc (DMRI), the City has unilaterally decided to cancel construction of the long promised Shops at Don Mills Community Centre. This is exactly the kind of backroom dealing that makes people distrust the modern political process.
Rather than discussing its plans, the city has now presented the community with two options, neither one of which includes our agreed to Community Centre. These are:
1) A huge City Staff luxury project of a Community Centre at the Don Mills and Eglinton site, or

2) Two facilities, each of limited use, with one of reduced size at the Celestica site, and a glorified gymnasium at the Shops at Don Mills, with
inadequate facilities and no pool.

THE DMRI IS STRONGLY OPPOSING THIS PROPOSAL AND BELIEVE THE COMMUNITY WILL OPPOSE IT AS WELL. WE NEED YOUR
HELP. WHAT CAN YOU DO?

  1. Contact us for a Save Our Community Centre sign for your lawn. www.dmri.ca/communitycentre
  2. Sign our online petition at www.dmri.ca/communitycentre.
  3. Join the DMRI – your $25 membership fee will go to help pay the legal and other costs arising from the need to defend our community.
CALL OUR CITY COUNCILLOR, DENZIL MINNAN-WONG TO LET HIM KNOW YOU WON’T STAND FOR THIS.
Denzil has already publicly pledged his support for the Community Centre at the Shops at Don Mills (See the attached letter), but he will need to know your thoughts so that he can keep fighting for us. He can be reached at 416 397 9256 or councillor_minnan-wong@toronto.ca
Don’t let city bureaucrats take away what they had already agreed was ours. It may be old fashioned of me, but I still believe a Deal is a Deal. Let’s hold the city to this deal. We are not asking for any new funds from an already tight city budget. We just want what all sides agreed to, which is a Community Centre at the Shops at Don Mills.
Without any consultation with the community, City Staff has decided to take the $21,000+ million earmarked by Cadillac Fairview for the Shops at Don Mills Community Centre, and spend it instead at the
Celestica site down at Don Mills and Eglinton. This committed money, and the Community Centre it was going to fund, was part of the legal agreement mentioned above, and also a determining factor in the
OMB decision to allow the redevelopment of the old Don Mills Centre property.
JOIN THE FIGHT. SAVE OUR COMMUNITY CENTRE.
    ERIK KALM, President”
